For many years,
the Orcutt Mineral Society has given college scholarships to students in
the Geology or Earth Sciences field. Many have been given to Allan Hancock
College in Santa Maria and to Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
The current amounts
are $300.00 plus 10% of the proceeds from the annual Rainbow of Gems show. Scholarships
are given on the basis of need, as determined by the Scholarship Committee.
The student must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 and demonstrate
an interest in Geology or Earth Science. The scholarship committee works with
the local colleges to determine the winning students and provides progress reports
